Balenciaga, in burgundy
In the more classical collection of BALENCIAGA by Nicholas Ghesquiere (which shows every season alongside the defilé styles), Coccodrillo discovered one of our favourites of the season. Combining many of Autumn Winter 2011-12′s top trends – rich colour, patent leather and a deliciously high wedge, this platform loafer style sets a new degree in office chic. The top-stitched detailing highlights the subtle burgundy tone. Worn with a slim trouser or a flirty miniskirt, the right lady can take this shoe from boardroom to boardwalk and back again.
This style is now available in-store at the COCCODRILLO Ladies Boutique, Antwerp.
The Resort Report
Looks from the Resort 2012 collections of LANVIN and YVES SAINT LAURENT

Looks from the Resort 2012 collections of BALENCIAGA and PETER PILOTTO

Looks from the Resort 2012 collections of BOTTEGA VENETA and CÉLINE
In that delightful season-between-seasons that is Resort (pre-spring to some), several of Coccodrillo’s favourite designers have delivered fabulously optimistic collections – each offering a concise, transitional wardrobe for the holiday season. Showing the garments in intimate presentations in New York or simply in lookbook images to the press, Resort collections feed the hardline commercial reality of the industry – but these designers prove that sellable doesn’t equal boring!
At YVES SAINT LAURENT, Stefano Pilati showed anchor motifs and a poppy print on prim, sailor-inspired ensembles – paired with lipstick red or white patent platform Mary-Janes. BOTTEGA VENETA‘s Thomas Maier concerned himself with pairing neutrals and brights with the right blend of utility details and louche silky tailoring. Also at LANVIN, Alber Elbaz went luxe and fluid – pleating, draping and fringing silk or jersey into longline frocks, slinky minidresses in neutrals and soft jewel tones – with a surprising finalé of childrenswear!
Phoebe Philo injected CÉLINE with some unexpected flower-power amidst tuxedo-inspired separates, balancing it all upon white platforms or pointy pumps. She explored multi-coloured leather patchwork across outerwear and accessories, and a fabulous flower print that hit full speed in a 50′s-inspired pantsuit (above). Florals were seen at PETER PILOTTO too, where Christopher de Vos and Peter Pilotto explored jacquards at a microscopic level, imbuing their digi-print wrap dresses with the character of silkscreen. For BALENCIAGA, Nicholas Ghesquiere once again moved forward by looking back, tapping into the house’s heritage for batwing sleeves, cocooning coats and voluminous shorts. The heavier silhouettes were brought firmly into the present with sporty details like the perspex visor, a shot of metallic silk, and winged, peep-toe sandals.
We look forward to seeing some of these shoe designs in Coccodrillo come Christmas!
Belgian boots… and Balenciaga
Paris has offered a sublime selection of covetable winter footwear in these heady days of prét-à-porter shows for Fall Winter 2011-12.
From our own Antwerp designers, DRIES VAN NOTEN delivered his expert take on an ankle boot (above), prepped in exotic python skin sitting on a transparent acrylic heel. At ANN DEMEULEMEESTER, a streamlined block wedge returned from SS11 (this time laced up the ankle or toe), and A.F. VANDEVORST‘s Philip Arickx & An Vandevorst proposed a strapped & buckled boot perched upon a razor-thin wedge. The MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA lifted the foot off the sole completely, covering some pairs entirely with mesh stockings.
A true highlight arrived upon the tiled floors of the Hôtel Crillon on Thursday morning, where Nicholas Ghesquiere dreamed up these delightful roccoco stilettos for BALENCIAGA (below). Severe in both their height and pointed toe, their structure was softened by the curlicues that snaked across the ankle or buckles in snakeskin down the foot.
It seems footwear has evolved from the high-impact platform ‘statement’ shoes of the recent past, returning to a more artistic & feminine sphere. No longer pre-occupied with aggressive, over-designed heels, designers seem to have softened – once again crafting feminine and unusual objets d’art for the feet. Coccodrillo approves.

The prestigious Les Arts Decoratifs museum in the Louvre presents a new exhibition of fashion from the years 1990s & 2000s as a retrospective of this groundbreaking period of design – a time when the internet, economic conditions & world affairs began to radically influence the expression of fashion designers across the globe.
Beginning in the early 1990s, the exhibition trawls the archives of many of the ‘avant-garde’ pioneers whose houses still remain today – standing as bastions of their iconic, archetypal aesthetics. The wares of Azzedine Alaia, Rei Kawakubo at Comme des Garcons & Jean Paul Gaultier are just some of the many names on show – each piece carefully chosen as a testament to the vision of these willingly provocative & surprising creators.
Stephen Jones & The Accent of Fashion
Coccodrillo are proud to announce our unique involvement in the exhibition “Stephen Jones & The Accent of Fashion” at the MoMu-Fashion Museum in Antwerp. Founders Geert Bruloot and Eddy Michiels have offered a long-term loan of Stephen Jones hats to the MoMu, a collection that encompasses more than 120 pieces. Geert is also the co-curator and the scenographer of the exhibition.
