Since 1937 the Spanish designer Cristobal Balenciaga was noted as a master couturier in Paris, pushing the boundaries of his time and re-inventing the feminine silhouette. Through the 1950s and 60s he became known for such creations as the balloon skirt and cocoon coat, and carried out extensive fabric research which led to new shapes and techniques.
