‘A Military Fit’, Fantastic Man

Fantastic Man, by Devin Blair

Via Fantastic Man:

Lacing one’s shoe is not confined to the realm of the criss-cross. In fact, a variety of lacing methods exist to cater to a variety of different footwear types – take the ladder lace, for instance, which is worn by military paratroopers. Starting at the base, the ends are run on the outside of the shoe into the next eyelet. The ends are crossed as normal, but then fed under the vertical lace before being fed into the eyelet directly above. (A full explanation and diagram may be found here.) The method is intended for taller boots, such as the pair seen above, as it makes tightening the lower sections easier. How intriguing! They are worn with trousers by BOTTEGA VENETA.

Three Wise Fashionistas

Three wise fashionistas, by Stephen Jones for Vogue

“Stephen Jones is topping off this vintage year for millinery with a seasonal cartoon of three seminal figures we simply can’t identify here at Vogue. Mr. Jones fired off this droll greeting from his headquarters in London’s Covent Garden—at home at last after a year spent revolving the globe hatting designer shows, the world’s social classes at the grandest set of weddings in a generation; not to mention the races. Yes, thanks to the arrival of a certain Duchess of Cambridge, the ante is upped on a new kind of young social formality which needs the finishing ministrations of a master like Mr. Stephen Jones, OBE. He’ll be happy to do antlers if you like, though.”

Lauren Hutton in Avedon’s “Classic Elegance”, 1973

Back in the days when Mr. Ferragamo was still naming his delicate shoes after the true starlets of his time, when fashion happened behind the closed doors of Paris and New York, and when luxury was not ostentatious but a discreet pleasure…

Richard Avedon captured this hilarious and candid short film of the ravishing actress Lauren Hutton in 1973, backstage at an energetic photo shoot amidst a bevy of hairdressers, makeup artists and stylists.

‘Cold Eye’ by Helmut Newton, 1980

"Shoe, Monte-Carlo, 1983" by Helmut Newton

In the spirit of dark winter nights spent indoors beneath tinkling crystal chandeliers amidst glamorous company, Coccodrillo recalls the oeuvres of the great photographer and filmmaker HELMUT NEWTON.

Perhaps slip into a pair of seriously-suggestive satin pumps from FERRAGAMO CRÉATIONS, or ANN DEMEULEMEESTER’s rather fetishistic lace-up boots…

… and make sure your man is dressed the part (we’d suggest MAX VERRE’s velour dress shoe, or maybe a smart brogue from CHURCH’S?)

LONDON, United Kingdom — Death and disgrace do not often darken the world of fashion. In the case of the first, a designer normally dies long after retirement and his demise is of only local interest. In the case of the second, it rarely happens and can usually be covered up by one means or another. But in the last eighteen months there have been two tragedies that can neither be covered up, nor ignored. They are, of course, the death by suicide of Alexander McQueen and the disgrace of John Galliano at Christian Dior.
